The Poll: volunteer work should be paid

Today is National Volunteer Day. A good moment to reflect on all those North Hollanders who help others without pay. Is there a volunteer you would like to put in the spotlight? And shouldn’t volunteers all get paid? Let us know and join the discussion today in De Peiling.

In the community center, at the ice rink or once a year with your colleagues: volunteer work comes in all shapes and sizes. Can North Holland actually still do without all that tireless effort? Are you also happy with all the volunteers in your area? We are very curious which volunteer you would like to put in the spotlight.

Today is National Volunteer Day, a national day to appreciate volunteers for everything they do. Many municipalities and organizations today show their appreciation for volunteers, with a present or sometimes even with a tribute or award.

Indispensable

Maybe you are one of those volunteers in North Holland. Do you lend a hand every week in the library, with the rescue brigade, in the nursing home or in another special place? We are very curious: what makes it so much fun to dedicate yourself to someone else? Do you enjoy working with other volunteers, is it a nice outing for you or did you have a lot of time left after your retirement and is this a nice use of your time?

Volunteers have become indispensable in our society. They invest a lot of time and love in someone else, without being paid for it. That’s why the question in De Peiling today is: shouldn’t we pay them for their work? Is that a good idea (the more appreciation, the better) or does it actually take away from the charm of the effort?
