The Pittsburgh Pirates released Manager Derek Shelton with immediate effect. This is the reaction to a persistent negative series.
The Pirates had recently lost seven games in a row, are now at a record of 12-26 and are already behind the leading Chicago Cubs.
“Derek worked hard and did a lot for this organization,” said General Manager Ben Cherington. “But I think a change is now necessary.” Owner Bob Nutting also commented on dismissal: “It was painful for all of us. Now we have to act with emphasis.” Shelton has been in office since the end of 2019 and has an overall balance of 306 wins and 440 defeats with the pirates.
Kelly takes over for the time being
In the interior, bank coach Don Kelly, who has been part of the coaching staff in Pittsburgh since 2020, takes over and enjoys great recognition within the organization. “He lives black and gold. Nobody lives this team more than Donnie,” said Nutting.
Despite a solid start of rookie star Paul Skenes, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year, the team is in the crisis. The pirates prove the rear places in Runs, Homeruns and Batting Average. In the last five games, only five runs come – the team stayed twice without a point.
Under the direction of Kelly, there are now three home games against the Atlanta Braves (May 9th – 11th). Afterwards, three away games follow the New York Mets (May 12th – 14th).
