The situation started when Smith got nervous with the comedian who hosted the gala, by Chris Rock a joke. Rock told a joke in his talk about Pinkett-Smith, who was sitting in the front row. Pinkett-Smith suffers from the inflammatory autoimmune disease alopecia, whose symptoms include hair loss.

Pinkett-Smith has spoken openly about her illness and hair loss in public. Rock commented on Pinkett-Smith’s bald head in his show. Smith got so upset that he climbed on stage and punched Rock in the face.

The beating immediately made headlines around the world. The quarrel had surprising consequences for the relationship.

Pinkett-Smith recently told NBC News in an interview that the married couple parted ways seven years ago. He said that he considered an official divorce, and also revealed that he was never able to file the divorce papers.

The couple lived apart during the Oscar frenzy.

– After all the years of wondering if I should give up on Will, the slap made me realize that I would never leave him.

– Who knows what mess our relationship would be in if it hadn’t happened.
