Has it really been a good 30 years since the last part of the “Naked Gun” series was released in cinemas? The Zucker brothers and Jim Abrahams’ slapstick series was unafraid of shallow jokes and impressed with a full-throttle humor more akin to “Mad” comic strips than any comparable comedy on the big screen.

Now the time seems ripe for a revival of the material! According to Variety, a remake is planned, directed by Akiva Schaffer (last: Chip and Dale: The Knights of Justice).

Who plays Frank Drebin?

The first question is, of course, who will replace Leslie Nielsen, who died in 2010 and who also appeared as Detective Franklin “Frank” Drebin in the pre-TV version of the story (“The Naked Gun” from 1982) and had previously had success with the absurd clothes ” Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) and The Incredible Journey in a Mad Airplane (1980).

According to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, Liam Neeson is the best choice to play the cop who gets stuck in one mess after another. Negotiations are already underway. Comedy ace Seth MacFarlane is set to be on board as a producer.

The three films The Naked Gun (1988), The Naked Gun 2½ (1991) and The Naked Gun 33⅓ (1994) all became box office successes. Priscilla Presley had a guest role. Whether there will be a reunion with her is just as unknown as the content of the new film.

It should be interesting how Liam Neeson, who is one of the most multifaceted actors in Hollywood and most recently appeared as the hero of action films (“Blacklight”), interprets his Frank Drebin. If he really signs for the comedy infusion.
