We live in a society that has idealized romantic love. From children’s stories to Hollywood movies, love is presented as a magical, perfect and eternal experience. We are taught that there is “the half orange”, that ideal person who will complete us and with whom we will live happily forever. However, this vision can get away from true love and, paradoxically, generate frustration and suffering.
The problem of the myth of romantic love is that it creates unrealistic expectations. It makes us believe that a perfect relationship does not require effort, that true love has no conflicts and that any difficulty means that “it was not the indicated person.” This narrative prepares us for disappointment, since human relationships, by nature, are imperfect and require work, commitment and, above all, consciousness, María Stella tells us.
Conscious love proposes a different perspective: to understand that we do not need someone to complete us, because we are already complete beings. Instead of looking for the perfect couple, it is about building an authentic relationship based on acceptance, mutual respect and shared growth. This implies recognizing that the other person is a human being with virtues, but also with defects, and learning to love from that truth.
Another key aspect of conscious love is to release fantasies that the other will be responsible for our happiness. Many times, we deposit in our partner the task of filling emotional gaps that in reality only we can heal. This expectation is not only unfair, but can become a source of constant conflict.
Breaking with the myth of romantic love does not mean giving up the illusion or passion, but to embrace a more realistic and enriching way of loving. It is a love that invites us to be honest with ourselves and with the other, to build relationships from authenticity and not from idealization.
True love is not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be either. It is a conscious construction that nurtures mutual respect, communication and commitment. By abandoning the search for unattainable fantasy, we discover that the most valuable love is one that is built day by day, with our imperfections and our humanity.
