Read the most important plans for Budget Day 2023 in simple language.

National budget 2024

Every year the cabinet draws up a budget. This states how much money the government spends and on what things. And how much money the government gets.

In 2024, the government will help people with little money. That is why people with more money pay slightly more taxes. And smoking and alcohol are becoming more expensive. As a result, most Dutch people will have a little more to spend next year.

Less poverty

Many things will become more expensive again in 2023. For example, groceries and the energy bill. As a result, people with a lower salary have less purchasing power. That means they can buy less. Or have difficulty paying their bills.

The government is taking measures to help those people. This means that the number of poor people will not increase further. And fewer children live in poverty.

What is the government doing?

  • The rental allowance and the child-related budget will increase.
  • Benefits and the minimum wage increase equally.
  • The employment tax credit will be €115 higher. People who earn around the minimum wage will pay less tax. This means they have more salary left over.
  • There will be free school meals for children who could use them.
  • People who cannot pay their energy bills receive help. A special fund pays part of the energy bill for them.
  • People who travel for work can receive more travel expenses back.

A good life for everyone

The government wants everyone to be able to participate in society. That is why a lot of money goes to purchasing power and equal opportunities in education. There is also money for housing, climate change, and the military. And the government wants to simplify the tax rules. Tax rules are changing for companies, but working internationally is becoming simpler.

Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba

Tax rules are also becoming better and simpler in the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba). And there will be money to support people here too.

National debt

Every country has debts: the national debt. The Dutch national debt does not cause a financial problem because it is low compared to other countries. The government does expect the debt to increase in the coming years. That is why they keep a close eye on the finances. To keep a healthy wallet. Also in the future.
