The most extraordinary televisions at IFA 2022

Anyone who thinks of televisions usually imagines the large, flat flicker boxes that come in different sizes. However, IFA 2022 showed that TV sets can also look different. We present the current TV trends.

For a long time, televisions always came in the same look – large, rectangular, flat and mostly made of black plastic. We’ve gotten used to this image. But now the manufacturers are experimenting with new formats and trends. At the IFA 2022, quite unusual televisions can therefore be seen. TECHBOOK looked at some models.

LG OLED Flex – the flexible TV

LG is one of the most popular TV manufacturers in Germany. At the IFA, the company presented a very special television with the LG OLED Flex (LX3). It is the world’s first flexible 42-inch OLED TV. We remember: LG already has TV sets in the premium segment that can be rolled up, for example.

The LG OLED Flex is aimed at users who like to gamble or also want to use the TV as a monitor. Because it can be bent individually, depending on requirements. In total, according to LG, there are twenty degrees of curvature to choose from, with the maximum curvature being 900R. This is set using a special button on the remote control. Users can choose from presets or individual preferences. The base of the television shown at the IFA is also height-adjustable.

Aside from the novel screen, the LG OLED Flex also offers a multi-view mode, which makes it possible to display content from two different sources at the same time. Dolby Vision gaming at 4K and 120Hz is just as important as HDMI and USB ports. The new television can be seen at IFA 2022 on the LG stand in Hall 18.

Glasses T1 – this TV is glasses

Lenovo has a very special “television” in its luggage at the IFA. Because the Glasses T1 are micro-LED glasses that project videos and films directly in front of the eyes. The sound is distributed via integrated loudspeakers. The video glasses should enable users to enjoy large-format TV content on the go. The appropriate content is sent from the smartphone or laptop to the Glasses T1. Thanks to the USB-C connection, the glasses are also compatible with many other playback devices. For operation with the iPhone, however, users need other cables, more precisely an HDMI adapter and the Lightning Digital AV adapter from Apple.

Lenovo has installed tiny micro-OLED panels in the glasses, which deliver a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels per eye. The Glasses T1 is scheduled to go on sale in China at the end of the year, with the market launch in other countries taking place next year. Lenovo has not yet given a price for the glasses.

Leica Cine 1 – the television in the box

Admittedly, the Leica Cine 1 is not a television in the narrower sense. Rather, the camera specialists remain true to themselves and have developed a laser beamer that is intended to bring that cinema feeling into the living room at home. The Cine 1 comes in fixed formats of 80 or 100 inches and thus throws a very large display diagonal on the wall. At the same time, the projector has an integrated sound system with Dolby Atmos surround sound, which makes external speakers or a soundbar superfluous.

Thanks to the integrated triple tuner, the Cine 1 can be operated on all common TV connections. Numerous streaming providers are also pre-installed. Thanks to the triple RGB laser technology, Leica promises radiant, yet natural color reproduction when playing videos and films. Even if the room is not darkened.

According to Leica, the Cine 1 will be available in Europe during the second quarter of 2023. The price is comparatively high at 6900 euros for the 80-inch model and almost 8000 euros for the 100-inch version. TV with special specs at the IFA

The televisions from LG, Samsung and Co., which can also be seen at the IFA, attract attention less with their appearance and more with their special specs.

For example, LG is showing the 97G2, the largest OLED TV to date, at the trade fair. Because the South Koreans have not only broken down the size limit – TECHBOOK reported on the first 42-inch OLED TV – but also up. The LG 97G2 offers an incredible 97 inches (2.5 meters) diagonal, making it the largest OLED TV in the world to date. The model had been announced for a long time, and now the market launch is finally here. With a price of around 25,000 euros, the LG 97G2 is not suitable for every buyer. The giant can be seen in Hall 18.

Also huge, but equipped with a QLED panel, is the 98-inch television that Samsung is showing in the Cube at the IFA. The QN100B will initially only come onto the market in the USA and South Korea, not in Germany. With a price of around 33,000 euros, it would be a niche product in this country anyway.

Anyone who would like to try a different TV interface apart from webOS, Tizen or Android TV could find what they are looking for with the new televisions from Roku. They are arranged in the lower or middle price category and come in different sizes with LED or QLED panels. The streaming specialist Roku provides the interface for the televisions presented at the IFA. We have described in detail what this looks like and what it offers in a separate article.
