The mayor of Rubí studies appearing in the case of the run over cyclists: “We want justice”

“A situation like this is absurd, wild… We are dismayed, sad but above all we are very angry.” This is how the mayor of Rubí pronounced herself, Ana Maria Martinezabout the tragic crime that occurred last Sunday on the road that connects Martorell with Castellbisbal where a drugged driver without a license ran over a group of cyclists from Rubí, killing two of them and injuring a third in critical condition, he fled and also made a comb. The council believes that this case goes beyond a traffic accident and is studying whether to appear as a popular accusation in the case. “We are waiting for the legal services, it is a possible action that we will finish specifying in the next few days,” explains Martínez, who also calls for a reform of the Penal Code to avoid “impunity.”

As soon as she heard the tragic news, the mayor interrupted her vacation. “Of course I knew them, the members of the cycling club they are very active and participative people of the life of the people”, he says. These days he has been reviewing the photos of last December 12, when the club celebrated its 50 years with a popular meal and invited the municipal authorities. “You saw them happy, radiant. They were people with a lot of tradition, closely linked to cycling, to sports. We gave them a commemorative plaque. They were people who loved what they did. They loved the sport and the city of Rubí”, continues Martínez.

Remember, for example, how they were asked for their opinion when the City Council decided to prohibit the passage of bicycles, cars and scooters in the center of the town to build an island of wayfarers. “They always stayed in the same square to make their exits, and together we thought of an alternative route to adapt to the regulations”, he continues. They also participated in the design of the Rubí master plan to promote the use of bicycles throughout the town. “They led a very active life,” he says.

That is why the shock of crime is enormous. “We feel sadness and a lot of anger. They were killed in the most absurd and avoidable way. We are talking about a case incomparable to all the other accidents on the road. I only hope that justice is done, it is the only thing that remains for us families , to the club and to the whole city”, he continues. The city council is studying whether to appear as a popular accusation in this case, something that the reports of the legal services must specify. “The support of the council will be maximum in everything they need,” he promises. This Wednesday a municipal representation will be present at the funeral of the two deceased cyclists, José María de la Torre and Miguel Moya, which will take place at 4:00 p.m. in the church of Sant Pere de Rubí. On September 3, an act of homage to the two cyclists is planned.

Reform of the Penal Code

The mayor also makes a certain self-criticism, as a representative of the administrations. “Faced with a situation like this, we politicians must relieve ourselves to toughen the Penal Code,” the mayor claims. “It cannot be that there is so much impunity, the protagonists, the families, is what they are demanding and we must find a way to protect the people who ride bicycles, who are absolutely weak”, continues Martínez. He defends that in the municipality they have been concerned about the situation of accidents for a long time, and they have already limited the speed within the city to 30 kilometers per hour. “This has happened gives us to stop and think again if we can do better,” he insists. He recalls that the roads are not municipal competence and proposes that reinforce the signaling or build safer roads.” We must also all think about this… when we drive we must remember who is the weakest. “However, he believes that Sunday’s event is not comparable to any other: “It was a totally avoidable savagery“.
