America the not so beautiful IV: When the thief is the hero. And you can still laugh.

“Roofman” was the name given to Jeffrey Manchester, who cleared out McDonald’s snack bars in the late 1990s by entering the restaurants via the roofs. He was remembered as “extremely kind and courteous.” And while Derek Cianfrance doesn’t necessarily portray him as a gentleman gangster in his first feature film in nine years, he does portray him as a sympathetic figure in a bittersweet, very light comedy about someone who takes the system on its horns.

Or better: criticism of capitalism packaged in a film that one would have expected in the seventies. Like a new “The Hot Rock” with Channing Tatum in what is undoubtedly his best role yet.
