The Greens and the Left do not want any development on the outskirts of Tempelhofer Feld

The CDU state chairman Kai Wegner spoke out in favor of building on the outskirts of Tempelhofer Feld – now there is criticism of it from the left and the Greens.

“Berlin has enough building potential, we should first use the sealed areas,” said Green Party leader Werner Graf of the “Berliner Morgenpost” (Sunday). The green district mayor of Tempelhof-Schoeneberg, Jörn Oltmann, added that he did not believe that building on Tempelhofer Feld would solve the housing problem in Berlin.

“We have to take a closer look at state-owned areas,” he said, and called for the 2014 referendum, in which a majority voted against development, to be taken seriously. “A new referendum must come from the population and not from politics.”

Wegner, who would become the new governing mayor in the event of a black-red coalition, spoke out in interviews for partial development of the area of the former airport in Tempelhof and for a referendum on this.

There is also criticism of this from the ranks of the Berlin left: “We positioned ourselves clearly at the time, and that has not changed,” said parliamentary group spokesman Thomas Barthel of the newspaper. “We appreciate this open space for the city.” He does not understand the renewed debate about this place, which is now protected by law. “No one even thinks of cutting down the Tiergarten.”

The Green Senator for Environment and Mobility, Bettina Jarasch, criticized on Saturday that Berlin was getting a backwards coalition with black and red. “Direct democracy is reversed through referendums from above designed to reverse successful referendums from below,” she said.

Discussions about the further construction of the A100 motorway and the Tempelhofer Feld are diversionary maneuvers from what is urgently needed in the next three years. For the Greens politician, these include administrative modernization, energy transition and realistic housing construction measures. SPD and CDU want to start coalition negotiations in the next few days.
