Why on earth?
This is how many could think about when the Finnish ski brand Peltonen expanded his activities to the ski jumping market this season.
The sales of ski jumping to consumers is non -existent. Still, Peltonen saw it as a good business opportunity.
-We wanted to get more little ones to the World Cup level. We thought it could be a good seam through the combined to get visibility. We needed Mäkisus, Peltonen’s factory manager Harri Pasila tells you.
According to him, the timing was perfect.
– At the same time, we have completely renewed our skating – for the first time in tens of years. When the combined uses only skating, it was a pretty good combination.
Rumors of death
Ski jumping is a tremendously popular TV species in Europe. Exceptional visibility is available for ski pairs.
-In ski jumping, every single athlete gets the same time of TV, whether he was a good or a little worse jumper, says Pasila.
Has the increase in visibility has already evolved in proven results?
– It has not been measured in any way, but all you have to do is watch on TV, so you notice it, Pasila replies.
The Finnish brand wants to send a heavy message to Europe.
– We want to show that we haven’t lost anything, even though we have not had bigger stars in cross -country skiing for a few years.
– We are by no means dead. Rumors about death are exaggerated.
No competence

Peltonen does not make his skis himself, but they come subcontracted from Slovenar, a Slovenian company.
Virtually all the World Cup jumpers skis are made on a custom -made job, which would be difficult for Peltonen.
– At least at this stage, we do not have such a competence that we would go to try it ourselves, Pasila admits.
Mika Kojonkoski, a ski jumper, understands Peltonen’s challenges.
– Making skis is a demanding process and doesn’t leave from scratch. For example, Augment bought men who were once developing Rossignol skis. If you go to your own production, you should be serious. Skis are not created in garages, says Kojonkoski.
Return to skiing
Peltonen is supposed to continue in the ski jumping business in the longer term, but the company is still looking for a return to the top of cross -country skiing.
– We have never known it consciously. We only lost athletes, Pasila says.
The return is sought through young Finnish skiers.
– Of course we would like to come from Finland, but for some reason it seems quite difficult. However, we are able to provide quite a bit of service compared to other brands, Pasila wonders.
