British documentary filmmaker Dan Reed talks about the pop star Michael Jackson in a straight tone, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Reed directed the one that came out in 2019 and sparked a wide discussion Leaving Neverland – document. The focus of the documentary is Wade Robson and James Safechuckwho claim in the film that Jackson sexually abused them as children.
The documentary was popular and won an Emmy award the year it was released.
Now, the documentary has been pulled from HBO Max after the streaming service lost a $100 million lawsuit against Jackson’s estate in 2020. According to Perikunnta, the documentary violated a 27-year-old, previously concluded agreement, which was related to the 1992 Dangerous– for the video recording of the tour.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reed opens up about his thoughts on Jackson’s fandom. In the interview, Reed tells, among other things, what he thinks about the fact that after the release of Leaving Neverland, the streaming numbers of the pop star’s music have increased and, for example, the Broadway musical about Jackson has been a hit.
– It shows that people don’t care that he was a child abuser. Literally, people just don’t care, Reed states in the interview.
In an interview, Reed compares Jackson’s fandom to religion.
– They think he is a god, so blasphemy is not allowed, and anyone who blasphemes a god will be put to death. It’s pretty routine. We’ve seen this happen for centuries, Reed noted.
Reed also has something to say to the press writing about the movie about Jackson.
– I think part of the press is clearly courting Jackson’s machinery because: A, the estate and the fan base have always made sure that the price of criticizing Michael is years of slander, slander and of course what else. And B, any connection to Jackson’s intellectual property can make a ton of money. If you can get involved and be a part of the success of this movie, then good for you, Reed states.
Reed believes many people will swallow their doubts about Jackson.
– They just say it’s a great jukebox movie and completely ignore the fact that this person was worse than Jeffrey Epstein, he says to the Hollywood Reporter.
Directed by Reed Leaving Neverland -documentary received a sequel last year. The documentary also followed the legal battle between Robson and Safechuck.
About Jackson Michael-film premiered on April 22.
