Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN) carries out speed measurements in Drenthe twice a year. The organization does this in places where they have received reports of excessive speeding. In mid-September, speed checks were therefore carried out at fifty locations in our province. The results are now known.

“Compared to previous years, it is noticeable that drivers are increasingly adhering to the speed limit,” says Yvonne Baas of VVN Drenthe. “We provide a lot of information and try to make people aware of their braking distance. That now seems to be paying off.”

This does not mean that VVN will stop taking measurements. “No, we want to keep people focused,” says Baas. Moreover, there are still places where people drive too fast. “In Borger-Odoorn we made a measurement of a driver who drove at 100 where 60 is the speed limit.”

The results are shared with the Drenthe municipalities, they can then decide for themselves whether they want to take action. “We then recommend installing a speed monitor that measures the speed twenty-four hours a day for a week.” If it turns out that people are consistently driving too fast, speed bumps can be installed, for example.
