The Double Life of Madeleine Collins by Antoine Barraud: the review

LA DOUBLE LIFE BY MADELEINE COLLINS
Genre: thriller, dramatic ✦✦✦
Direction: Antoine Barraud. With Virginie Efira, Quim Gutiérrez

Virginie Efira and Quim Gutiérrez in a scene from the film “The Double Life of Madeleine Collins”.

Virginie Efira seems born to play Hitchockian blonde roles. It is no coincidence that the portrait she portrays here – a woman divided between two lives, two families, two names, with the Franco-Swiss border as a watershed – fits her like a glove.

Until, one after the other, revelations and accidents of fate crack the scaffolding of lies he has builtalso undermining the viewer’s expectations.

Who is Judith (of Madeleine Collins who gives the title to the film we will tell you nothing)? A psychopath, a skilled manipulator, a ruthless double agent or a self-giving woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown?

“He who has two houses loses his mind”: Eric Rohmer invented a false proverb in The nights of the full moon, Barraud’s film puts it into practice. With Kim Novak as a guiding spirit, Efira stages a fascinating and distressing loss of control in equal measure.
