Gymnast who represented Germany three times at the Olympics Kim Bui opens up about the unethical methods of his long-time coach in a recent biography 45 seconds.

According to Bui, the trainer regularly weighed him and restricted his diet, as a result of which he began to put on weight in a way that endangered his health.

Harsh patronage eventually led to bulimia.

– I vomited and vomited until something came out. After that I hung on the toilet seat like a drug addict who spiked himself, Bui describes his experience.

The coach also tried to limit Bui’s private life by telling her to refuse sex with her boyfriend because bed bugs could affect her athletic performance.

The number of rules overwhelmed him.

– It was torture, says Bui.

Subordinate relationship

Bui says he is advocating that young athletes know how to take behavior suggestive of an eating disorder seriously.

He also emphasizes that he does not want to demonize his former coach, although he makes it clear that the athlete-coach relationship was not on a healthy basis.

– I felt very strongly that I was dependent on him in a certain way, which prevented me from growing into myself. I always saw myself as a little gymnast with him and never as an adult, respected person. We were unable to communicate as equals.

Bui, 34, ended her gymnastics career last August at the European Championships in Munich, where she was part of Germany’s bronze medal team.

The two-time German champion’s only personal competition medal is bronze at the 2011 European Championships.
