The city of Ostend is expanding the range for homeless people because of freezing cold

It will also freeze during the day this week, which is why the City of Ostend has extended the range for the homeless until Sunday 18 December:

  • The Growth House has increased its capacity to 35 beds.
  • Street corner work has started evening rounds to address people who stay in the public space at night and to refer them as much as possible to the Doorgroeihuis and/or the most appropriate care.
  • Walk-in center Kwiedam extends opening hours from Tuesday, December 13 until the end of winter (with the exception of December 22, 2022 to January 2, 2023). Kwiedam is now open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Friday, December 16 and Friday, December 30, people are welcome in the street corner workshop from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm.

Alderman for Welfare and Care Natacha Waldmann: “No one should have to sleep on the street, which is why the City of Ostend is using extra shelter and places to warm up for those who wish during these cold days. We will also not let those who refuse a place to sleep in the sting: the street work is now running at full speed to reach everyone as well as possible. Even those without a roof over their heads are entitled to a humane approach.”
