It started with a modest news item in mid-March. A humpback whale had washed up on the German Baltic Sea coast near the village of Timmendorf. The enormous animal attracted attention and of course pity, as it lay there on that sandbank. Was it stranded there to die or would it soon swim away again at high tide?
