The Duffer brothers’ “Stranger Things” spin-off starts on Netflix on May 21, 2026 – with pensioners against the supernatural.

On January 1, 2026, the Duffer brothers concluded the hit Netflix series with the final episode of the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things”. The series is considered one of the most successful Netflix projects ever and excited fans worldwide. They can soon look forward to new material from the “Stranger Things” universe. In five weeks, on May 21, 2026, the showrunners’ latest prank, “The Burroughs,” will begin. The first trailer can now be seen – and some insights can already be drawn from it.

Pensioners against the supernatural

While in the original a group of young teenagers fought the mysterious threat Vecna, “The Burroughs” reverses the perspective and puts a group of pensioners at the forefront of the action.

The plot follows the retired main actors in a similar scenario to the children in the predecessor. The group lives a quiet life in a housing complex for the elderly when a mysterious threat appears in the form of a monster that seems to want to take away the characters’ remaining time to live. As a result, they have to face this and take up the fight with a new monster.

Three takeaways from the trailer

The trailer for the series doesn’t reveal too much, but some elements of the final product can already be seen.

1. Central motif: time as an existential threat

A theme that comes up again and again in the trailer is the theme of time. The threat deprives the characters of “the one thing they don’t have.” This connects the sci-fi motif directly to old age and creates an urgency in two dimensions: physically through the monster and existentially through the end of life.

2. Mixture of nostalgia, horror and ensemble dynamics

A lot can also be said about the style of the new series: The trailer shows a mix of 80s nostalgia and classic mystery horror as well as an ensemble of well-known actors who are appropriately portrayed as “overlooked outsiders”. This is a motif that relies heavily on group dynamics and character chemistry.

3. Invisibility and social marginalization in old age

The new Netflix release will probably also contain a social component. The threat is not only physical, but also socially charged: the characters are hardly noticed or taken seriously because of their age. This is used to let the protagonists act independently, but at the same time refers to social exclusion in everyday life and gives the plot an additional socially critical dimension.
