Czech hockey legend Josef Horešovský has died. Several Czech media outlets are reporting on the matter.

Horešovský won the world championship as a player in 1972.

– After health problems, the legend of Sparta Prague and Czech hockey, Mr. Josef Horešovský, is gone. He died on December 15, Sparta Prague reported on their website.

He was 79 years old when he died.

The big defender was known in the rink by the nickname “Karhu”.

During his playing career, he won two Czechoslovak championships with the Dukla Jihlava team in 1970 and 1971.

He ended his playing career in the 1977–78 season.

Czech Sport website according to the report, an NHL contract with the St. Louis Blues had been drawn up for the defender, but Horešovský did not want to move abroad.

Horešovský continued with hockey and went on to a coaching career.

His first stint as head coach of Sparta Prague in the early 1980s did not bring success. However, Horešovský coached the club he loved for the second time in the 90s, and the second period at the club was successful: Horešovský was an assistant coach in Sparta’s championship teams in 1990 and 1993.
