Woe to simply call it a game, woe to define it outdated. Just in conjunction with the Beijing Olympics, lo Stock Sport (skittles on ice) celebrates the 14th edition of the world championships. It will happen to Collalbo, on the Renon Plateau (BZ), from 15 to 27 February and it will be a real battle. It could not be otherwise, given the long tradition of this sport, which boasts two Olympic appearances in Garmisch (in 1936) and Innsbruck (1964) and a long tradition of hard-fought international challenges. Of course Germany and Austria they are preparing to collect medals once again, but competition will be numerous as they are expected to go further 500 athletes from 26 nations including Guatemala, Namibia, India, Gabon, Brazil and Australia. Among these, of course, is Italy with well-founded hopes for a medal especially in team competitions.

How to play? Stock Sport is a cross between curling and bowls. It involves throwing special pins weighing about 5 kg on an icy surface trying to get close to a target or reaching the maximum possible distance. Depending on the specialty, therefore, precision or strength come into play, but everyone can play while having fun. It is no coincidence that in almost all locations in South Tyrol, the Italian cradle of this sport, there are specially equipped fields complete with instructors and equipment rental. Official competitions involve individual or team challenges (also mixed) and before Covid 19 they were always followed by a very large and passionate audience. Even with the limits dictated by the pandemic, it will still be possible to watch the world championships from the stands of the Ritten Arena.

Everyone on the track after the races The Renon Plateau offers numerous possibilities for fun in the snow, to be seized between one challenge and another. To begin from the 15 kilometers of ski slopes and from the panoramic cross-country ski run of Cima Lago Nero, which can be reached with the 8-seater gondola lift from the valley station of Pemmern. At high altitude there are also one snow park for freestylers and a fun snowkiting area. For those who love trekking on the snow, here is the Premium Tour Cieloronda, the first certified winter trail in Italy, a circular itinerary that starts from the top station of the cable car and offers a unforgettable view of the Dolomites. There are also numerous trails for ski mountaineering and snowshoeing, and there is also a 2.5 km long toboggan run. Impossible to get bored.
