The 1975 live: Matt Healy eats raw meat and crawls into a TV

During a performance by The 1975 at Madison Square Garden in New York on Monday (November 07), Matt Healy provided viewers with special images: During the interlude of “Consumption,” the 1975 singer began eating raw meat, doing push-ups make and crawl into a TV.

Accompanied by a cinematic orchestral suite, Healy’s performance is part of the band’s North American tour.

Performance Details: A tomahawk steak and genitals

NME writes about the show: “After settling on a couch and smoking a cigarette, Healy strolled to a center stage carpet where he knelt, stripped off his shirt, and had a raw tomahawk steak in front of him. After taking a sip from a hip flask, the singer took two hearty bites of the steak (while still clutching his genitals) before doing a series of push-ups and crawling into a hollow TV.”

At the end of his Consumption performance, the musician explained on stage: “I’m sorry if you came with your father and I touched my cock. It’s your fault if you brought it with you.”

Impressions and reactions of the fans

One person ironically posted on Twitter:
“Wow, I can’t wait to see The 1975 live. I hope they play ‘Robbers’. Matt Healy: Just eat raw meat on stage.”:

Wordless posts from followers followed, who also referred to Healy’s snack:

NME’s Erica Campbell wrote of the steak-eating moment: “Is it a metaphor for the dangers of consumerism? A border crossing fusion of live art and music? Before the audience can answer those questions and make sense of the amazing moment, the music resumes.”

She further summarizes the show: “It’s the kind of night that only The 1975 could throw. The kind of night that leaves you roiled and reminded of why you love live music in the first place. You go home and, like fans do before they head to the subway, you think, ‘I didn’t know how much I needed this.'”

North America tour and current album

The troupe is currently touring North America. In 2023 the band will also play in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The current record BEING FUNNY IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE was released in October – our review is here.
