The 11 of 41 Barcelona councilors who left before the end of their mandate

It is common for municipal groups to suffer casualties and discharges during the mandates, and the one that now concludes is not an exception. Councilors who prefer to opt for another professional destination, or for another administration.

Before starting the list, it is worth mentioning the separate case that occurred just a few weeks ago, when the ERC councilor Marina Gassol died of cancer at age 50. A tragedy that has nothing to do with the exits and entrances that are experienced in the consistory, and that shook all groups, beyond ideological differences.

The rest of the cases respond to situations that have not already been strange in previous mandates. Six groups won representation on the city council in the 2019 municipal elections. In order from most to least voted: CKDwith 10 councillors, Barcelona in Comú, also with 10 but with 5,000 fewer votes; he PSCwith eight; Barcelona pel Canvi-Citizenswith six, togetherwith five, and the PP, with two. Immediately, Barcelona en Comú-Ciutadans was divided in two: Ciutadans was left with four councilors and Barcelona pel Canvi with two.

Maria Buhigas

In the ERC group, the urban planner Maria Buhigas He left the city council in September 2020 to pursue other professional challenges. She was replaced by the aforementioned Marina Gassol, which was number 11 on the list headed by Ernest Maragall four years ago. When Gassol passed away, alex fexas He entered as the new Republican councilor for these last weeks of the mandate.

He also said goodbye to the Republican group Miquel Puig, a former pujolist called to direct the economic affairs of the city if Maragall was mayor, which he was clearly chosen to manage. He went to the Generalitat, to take care of the Next Generation funds. Rosa Surinach entered his place.

Mari-Klose

Buhigas was not the first to leave. Before, in June of that year, and for health reasons, she left the consistory Margarita Mari-Klosemayor of the PSC, who was replaced by Joan Ramon Riera. To maintain the review by groups, it is worth mentioning the other abandonment that the socialists have experienced: the first deputy mayor, Jaume Collboni, surprised by giving up his position to focus on the electoral campaign of the municipalities. Nuria Carmona took over.

In the case of Barcelona en Comú there has been a drop: Joan Subirats announced in July 2021 that he was leaving to retire at age 70. He was replaced by the current Councilor for Education and the Eixample, Pau González. Subirats suspended his retirement just five months later, when he became Minister of Universities in the Government of Pedro Sanchez.

Changes in Barcelona for Canvi

After the rupture between both groups, due to the discrepancies of Ciutadans on the advisability of making mayor again Ada Colau to prevent the independentista from being Ernest Maragall, Barcelona pel Canvi began the mandate with two councilors: Manuel Valls and Eva Pareraand Cs, with four: Luz Guilarte, Celestino Corbacho, Marilén Barceló and Paco Sierra. Corbacho’s case is peculiar: he voted for Colau, following in the wake of Valls, and immediately afterwards he joined the Ciutadans group.

Of the six cited, the first to leave was Valls, that the truth is that it endured much longer than most predicted. He said goodbye in August 2021 and returned to France to try to resume there, with little success, the political career that led him to be prime minister. Óscar Benítez took his place.

Corbacho, retired twice

A year later, in September 2022, corbacho advertisement who was leaving to retire. To retire for the second time, because when he entered the Valls list he was a pensioner. His departure from the group was the trigger for a riot led by Sierra that ended with another goodbye: Luz Guilarte then considered that the time had come to take those of Villadiego.

He did it after Sierra leaned on Corbacho’s substitute, noemi martinwho had been in the city council for 10 days, to unseat Guilarte from the presidency by two votes –those of Sierra and Martín- to one.

Non-attached Councilor

A Guilarte, replaced by Julia Bareathey dismissed her by two votes to one because by then Ciutadans had only had three councilors for a long time: Marilén Barceló left the group but continued in the consistory. He tried to go to the Valls and Eva Parera, Barcelona for Canvibut failed to do so: the general secretary of the town hall, Jordi Casasruled that it was not possible.

Converted into a non-attached councilor, Barceló was able to physically move to Barcelona pel Canvi: He crossed the corridor of an office to which his new colleagues enabled him. Barceló does not compute in the outputs of the list, because there he has continued, voting what he votes Parera, who since leaving Valls – with whom we no longer speak – is the president of Barcelona pel Canvi. Parera renamed the group, which is now called valentines. The mess is considerable for those who do not follow the day to day of the consistory.

Elsa Artadi couldn’t take it anymore

A few months after insisting that it was ridiculous that she had to confirm that she would be a candidate in 2023, the leader of Junts per Catalunya, Elsa Artadi, He called a press conference in which, completely disassembled, he stated that he could not take it anymore, that he was leaving the city council and politics.

replaced it Joan Rodriguez, who is seen as one of the councilors with the most future in Junts. The group had a loss at the beginning, that of Albert Civit, which does not count, because he did not get to take the minutes. But the head of the list, symbolic, Joaquim Fornhe did take possession, but he lost the position when he was disqualified by the sentence of the ‘procés’. Francina Villa HE incorporated to the consistory in its place in October 2019.

Finally, the PP has experienced a loss, very last minute, that of its mayor in 2019, Joseph Bou, that he left at the end of March, when it had been a long time since he had broken with the party. He left among the praise of his rivals for the peculiarity of his mood, between affection and earthquake. Inma Delgado she was appointed mayor in his place.
