Thanks to the narrow 3-2 away win at 1. FC Union Berlin, FC Bayern is once again wintering in the DFB Cup after years of sadness and is keeping its hopes of three possible title wins alive. For long-time coach Dieter Hecking, who won the DFB Cup with VfL Wolfsburg ten years ago, the Munich team is also working very purposefully in the cup competition this season.
“Warned by the 2-2 draw in the league against Union, they approached the game with great seriousness and still trembled their way to victory,” Dieter Hecking summarized FC Bayern’s performance on Wednesday evening in his “kicker” column.
Hecking, who was head coach at second division club VfL Bochum until the fall, decided that the DFB Cup this year is more important for the German industry leader than in previous years.
At that time, the Munich team were knocked out of the competition by, among others, Holstein Kiel, SC Freiburg and 1. FC Saarbrücken.
Hecking emphasizes: “Kompany wants to win the title”

“Of course, the cup is the ‘smallest trophy’ for this club with the ambition to become German champions and, at best, Champions League winners,” wrote the 61-year-old, but then added: “Perhaps the focus in recent years has not been 100 percent on that, while the opponents are always extremely keen to throw FC Bayern out. That’s why I believe that the cup is very important for Bayern this season.”
According to Hecking, FCB head coach Vincent Kompany plays a crucial role in the hunt for the first cup win since 2020.
It should be noted how important the DFB Cup is to him: “Vincent Kompany wants to win titles, he doesn’t make any distinctions. And from experience I can say: these three days in Berlin around the cup final are something very special and unforgettable, even for players, coaches and clubs that have already won everything.”
