What had already been reported in consistent media reports for weeks has now been de facto confirmed once again by his father and most important advisor, Hans Wirtz: Florian Wirtz will stay at Bayer Leverkusen beyond the summer and play for at least one more season with the Werkself.
As father Hans explained, his son’s clear plan is to gain a foothold in the Champions League in the B04 jersey in the 2024/2025 season: “If Florian plays in the Champions League with Leverkusen next season, he will go to the next phase of training,” Hans Wirtz was quoted in “Sport Bild” when asked about the 20-year-old’s next career step.
Florian Wirtz has long been considered one of the best players in the Bundesliga and has already scored over 50 direct goals in 102 appearances in the German upper house.
However, he has not yet made an appearance in the Champions League, as he missed all of Bayer Leverkusen’s premier class games in 2022 because of his torn cruciate ligament.
There is no longer any doubt that the Rhinelanders will return to the premier class this year. Leaders Leverkusen are already 21 points ahead of fifth-placed RB Leipzig, who would now miss the Champions League. Early CL qualification can be made clear early on the match day after next.
Wirtz has a contract in Leverkusen until 2027
With the ambition to lead Leverkusen as a regular player and top performer in the Champions League and to win titles with the Werkself if possible, Wirtz has long since given up on the idea of being able to leave the club this summer.
As a 20-year-old, all doors are still open to him next year. Especially to FC Bayern or to the English Premier League to FC Liverpool or Manchester United, where Wirtz had been traded repeatedly in the recent past.
The Leverkusen club management has always been deeply relaxed about Florian Wirtz’s personnel after sports director Rolfes and Co. managed to tie the youngster to the club long-term until 2027 without an exit clause.
