Mike Rutherford has updated fans of Phil Collins about his health in a new interview. On Thursday morning, March 9, Rutherford appeared on BBC Breakfast to discuss his band Mike and the Mechanics’ 2023 tour, with Collins’ son Nic filling in as drummer.

“Phil enjoying his time at home”

Speaking on Breakfast TV, Rutherford said of his long-time collaborator: “As you know Phil is a little more immobile than he used to be, which is a shame, but he was in good spirits on tour. He’s fine at home now, enjoying life. He’s worked so hard over the last few years. I think he’s enjoying his time at home.”

The 72-year-old Collins suffered a spinal injury in 2007 and has only been able to go on stage with great discomfort in recent years. At his last Genesis show in March 2022, he sat on stage in a wheelchair to sing and play the tambourine. The seven-minute show with Rutherford can be seen on “Daily Star”.

Nic vs. Phil Collins: Who is the Better Drummer?

When the presenter asked who the better drummer was – Phil Collins or his son Nic – Rutherford diplomatically replied: “I always support the fathers because I belong to that generation. Phil is the best drummer but Nic is awesome too. He’s like his father, but a bit different.” During the last Genesis tour last year, Nic replaced his father on drums. Rutherford says it was really nice to have the two side by side.
