Former world champion Anthony Joshua was injured in a car accident and two of his confidants died. Now further details are known.
A burst tire triggered the serious car accident in which former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua was injured and two people were killed in Nigeria on Monday. As the traffic safety authority TRACE announced on Tuesday, the front tire on the passenger side burst while driving at excessive speed. The vehicle then lost control and crashed into a parked truck at high speed.
“It is clear from the preliminary investigation that the SUV in which Anthony Joshua was traveling was traveling at excessive speed,” TRACE spokesman Babatunde Akinbiyi told AFP. The accident occurred on Monday morning on the main road between Lagos and Ibadan in Ogun State.
After the passenger side tire burst, the driver lost control and crashed into a parked truck. The 36-year-old boxer’s two companions, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, died at the scene of the accident. Professional boxer Joshua survived the accident and was taken to a hospital in Lagos for examination. Footage on social media showed the Briton leaving the car with his face contorted in pain.
The 2012 Olympic champion regularly visits his family in southwest Nigeria. Joshua defeated Wladimir Klitschko in a spectacular fight in 2017 and dominated heavyweight boxing for a time. Most recently, he won a financially lucrative fight against influencer Jake Paul, which earned him at least $30 million.
