For around 1,000 first-year students, a new phase of life begins with the winter semester 2024/2025. They were all ceremoniously welcomed on September 16, 2024 in the St. Petri University Church on their first day of study. Among them were over 100 students from all over the world, including Morocco, Jordan, China, Iraq, Ukraine and the USA.
Live a welcoming culture with your brain, heart and hands
In his welcome, Pastor Dr. Bernd Schwarze particularly focuses on the internationality of the TH Lübeck and its students and finds words of warning: “But right now, when distrust is spreading again, the task of resolutely living a culture of welcome with brains, hearts and hands is just now beginning. We warmly welcome you all, dear students, whoever you are and wherever you come from. They will enrich and enliven the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences and our entire city.”
Mayor Henning Schumann also agrees: “I am very pleased that so many students have enrolled at the Technical University again in the 2024/25 winter semester and I wish everyone an educational time. Lübeck is not only a historic Hanseatic city, but also a place of innovation and knowledge. I really hope that many students will grow fond of Lübeck and stay in our city after their studies.”
The President of the TH Lübeck, Dr. In her introductory words, Muriel Helbig addresses academic freedom and encourages first-year students to get actively involved in student life: “Make the TH Lübeck YOUR university, get involved.”
The representatives of the General Student Committee (AStA) and the Student Parliament (StuPa) showed what this commitment can look like. They demonstratively rolled a meter-long piece of paper across the lectern and passed on their hard-earned wisdom to the freshmen. In addition to general tips on everyday study life, there were also special exam tips: “At some point, the meaning of ‘This is relevant to the exam’ will be even more important to you than ‘I love you’,” says Fabienne Zersch, first board member of the AStA.
Studying: time for networking and new experiences
In their welcoming remarks, the deans of the four faculties emphasized how important it is to focus on the core subjects as well as to think outside the box during this time. “Network with students from other departments and go to the festivals that our wonderful student councils organize,” says Prof. Manfred Rößle, dean of the department Applied Natural Sciences.
The dean of the department Mechanical engineering and economicsProf. Tim Voigt, subtly encourages the students based on his own experience: “I didn’t miss a single lecture during my studies – as far as I remember.” Prof. Sebastian Fiedler pointed out for the department Construction based on the words of the well-known architect Hans Döllgast. “Life is about decisions, make them and have fun with them too.”
Prof. Andreas Schäfer, dean of the department Electrical engineering and computer science drew a link to Pastor Schwarze’s greeting: “Speaking in different tongues – learning languages. This will also happen to you in the lectures. Stick with it, you will learn these new languages.”
