Xiaomi buys three Teslas to study technology
In order to better understand the competition, Xiaomi is using an unusual means: The Chinese tech company bought three Tesla Model Ys and examined them in detail. When disassembling it, it became clear how much Xiaomi boss Lei Jun appreciates the electric SUV. He called the vehicle “great” and emphasized that his company could learn a lot from Tesla, as quoted by a post on X.
Xiaomi’s CEO commented on Tesla’s full autonomous delivery: “Tesla is truly remarkable, leading industry trends in many areas, especially with FSD. We still have a lot to learn.”

Respect for the strongest rival
Although the Xiaomi YU7 is considered a direct challenger to the Tesla Model Y, Lei Jun does not shy away from publicly praising the rival. In another post on In doing so, he makes it clear that Tesla remains a serious benchmark for him – even if Xiaomi competes in the same segment with the YU7.

Tesla as a role model for efficiency and autonomous driving
For Lei Jun it is clear: the success of the Model Y is not just based on its popularity Elon Musk. Tesla sets standards in energy consumption and is at the same time a leader in key technologies such as autonomous driving. Xiaomi therefore examined the Model Y in detail to learn from these strengths. The CEO was particularly impressed by Tesla’s progress in full self-driving. When a fully autonomous vehicle was delivered to its new owner in Austin for the first time, he publicly congratulated and spoke of a “leading role in industry trends.” In doing so, he made it clear that Tesla remains the most important reference point for Xiaomi – especially when it comes to future technologies in which the company itself still has to gain a lot of experience.
Xiaomi is positioning itself as a serious Tesla rival
With the YU7, Xiaomi has introduced a model that is aimed directly at the Tesla Model Y. The vehicle is larger, cheaper and has numerous features that make it particularly attractive. The response was enormous: within just a few minutes of the start of sales, around 200,000 firm orders were received. As Teslarati reports, Xiaomi is clearly signaling that it not only admires Tesla, but is also actively challenging it in its home market of China. The YU7 is considered the Model Y’s strongest rival to date – an indication of how seriously Xiaomi takes its role in the competitive electric SUV market.
