With the humanoid robot Optimus, Tesla wanted to set new standards – but now there is a standstill. Technical deficits and internal restructuring brakes the group’s plans.
• Missing production objective of 5,000 units for 2025
• Internal renovation and technical weaknesses delay the project
• Market potential remains loud Elon Musk immense
A project with great promises
It was one of the most striking announcements from Tesla: a humanoid robot, made in mass production, affordable, versatile – and potentially a new billion dollar business. But the Optimus project has not yet developed as planned. The production, which according to the original plans 2025 should take up 5,000 units, hardly comes off the spot. Instead, the project suffers from technical setbacks and an internal reorganization, which has now led to a preliminary break. According to Quartz, Tesla is now significantly behind the development of Optimus.
Tesla’s production stands still
Already in June Tesla stopped orders for central components of the robot. There was no official justification, but it was said that the processes were simply not ready for series production from circles that are familiar with the processes. As reports Coincentral, the team, especially the mechanics of the arms and hands, cause difficulties. The components would overheat that the battery life was inadequate and the complexity in production is greater than expected. The temporary production break should now be used to make the technology more robust and marketable.
A personnel upheaval as a turning point
In parallel to the technical reorientation, something has shifted somewhat. Milan Kovac, who was previously responsible for the Optimus project, left Tesla. The successor succeeded Ashok Elluswamy, who previously headed the area for autonomous driving. According to a report by Electrek, the change is not only considered an internal Rochade, but as a strategic cut. The management of the robot project goes into experienced but thematically new hands.
The big vision remains – despite all the stumbling blocks
Elon Musk is nevertheless unimpressed. On the contrary: the CEO regularly confirms that Optimus will be one of the most important pillars for Tesla’s future in the long term. According to Webpronews.com, he outlined a scenario in a conference call, in which the company could produce one million robots annually. He put the market potential at up to $ 30 trillion. This number is spectacular – but by no means undisputed. Industry experts point out that no humanoid robot has so far been successfully operated.
