• Tesla apparently plans robotaxi tests in New York City
• job advertisements in Queens
• No permits for test operations yet

The electric car maker Tesla apparently also wants to bring his ambitious robotaxi project to New York City. According to the “Wall Street Journal”, this emerges from current job advertisements, in which the company is looking for so -called “Vehicle Operators”, which are to be used in the Flushing district in Queens. These drivers should control test vehicles with activated autopilot or full self-driving technology in order to collect audio and video data for the further development of the systems.

No permits have yet been applied for

Despite these preparations, Tesla has so far applied for the necessary permits neither at the city’s traffic authority (NYC Department of Transportation) nor at the state level to test autonomous vehicles on public roads – even if a safety driver is on board. However, such permits are mandatory for testing in New York, according to the US broadcaster. For comparison: The Google sister group Waymo has already submitted corresponding applications and began to collect data in the city.

Strategic importance for Teslas Robotaxi plans

The activities in New York go to Elon Musk’s strategic vision of making the Robotaxi service available for about half of the US population by the end of 2025-a goal that depends largely on regulatory releases. Tesla currently operates restricted robotaxi services with security drivers in Austin, Texas, and in the San-Francisco-Bay area.

It is still open whether and when the self -driving Teslas will actually roll through the streets of Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens. Without the necessary permits, the current activities in New York will initially be limited to the status of preparations. However, active personnel recruitment on site indicates that the group is planning the step into one of the most busiest cities in the world – and thus also the challenge of testing its autonomous driving system under extreme urban conditions.

In view of this project on Thursday, the Tesla share appears at times by 1.92 percent lower at Nasdaq trading at $ 332.90.
