According to consistent media reports, there is a change in the coaching position at the second-placed team in the Greek Super League 1: Ivan Jovanovic, who has been in office since summer 2021, has to take his hat off, and none other than the clubless ex-Turkey coach Fatih Terim will be in charge from now on in Athens, it is said.
Update 6:40 p.m.: Both Panathinaikos and Terim officially confirmed the collaboration late Tuesday evening. The club initially did not provide any information about the term.
The 70-year-old Turkish coaching legend was on the sidelines at Galatasaray for the fourth time until January 2022. He previously won the double with the club between 1997 and 2019 and the UEFA Cup in 2000. As Turkey’s national coach, he also contested the European Championship tournaments in 1996, 2008 and 2016 during his four terms in office. He is said to have signed a contract with Panathinaikos until the summer of 2025.
The club had only won three of its last eight competitive games and lost the top spot in the league to PAOK Saloniki. Jovanovic led the club to cup victory in 2022 and achieved an average points average of 1.92 points in a total of 113 competitive games.
