Jelena Ostapenko won the tennis tournament in Stuttgart with an impressive performance. The Latvian celebrated a two-set victory against the world ranking Aryna Sabalenka on Monday.
Former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko has denied tennis star Aryna Sabalenka the hoped-for title win in Stuttgart and chose herself as the winner. The 27 -year -old Latvian surprised in the final with an amazingly clear 6: 4, 6: 1 against number one in the world. For Sabalenka, however, the WTA tournament in Stuttgart does not remain a good pavement. The Belarussin also lost her fourth final in the Baden-Württemberg state capital.
Ostapenko dominates from the start
The two finalists offered the approximately 4,200 spectators a high -class, fast -paced finale. However, Sabalenka had too rarely answers against the powerful game from Ostapenko. In the first sentence, the Latvian was enough break to win it 6: 4. In the second round, too, she often brought her risky game through and immediately took the three-time Grand Slam winner from the service. Sabalenka seemed increasingly annoying, the turn could no longer ring it. After 86 minutes of play, Ostapenko used her first match ball to win the tournament.
Ninth WTA title for Ostapenko
The French Open winner from 2017 secured her first title since February 2024 and the ninth title on the WTA tour as a whole. “I love playing here. I’m just really happy today,” she said. Sabalenka, on the other hand, had already lost the final in Stuttgart in 2021, 2022 and 2023. In the quarter -finals of the tournament, Ostapenko (number 24 in the world) had die World ranking second IGA Swiatek (Poland) beaten. In addition to prize money of around 140,000 euros, the 27-year-old can also look forward to a sports car from the Porsche tournament sponsor.
No German Title candidate in sight
The last German winner so far was Laura Siegemund in 2017. “It is a different number for every tournament if a local hero is part of the favorite group,” said tournament director Markus Günthardt in his otherwise positive tournament conclusion. Of the five German participants in the main field of the first-class sandplace hall tournament, none had gone beyond the second round.
