The Dutch tennis player Tallon Griekspoor has reached the fourth round of the Shanghai master’s tournament at the expense of Jannik Sinner. The Dutch number 31 of the world ranking was one break in the decisive third set on Italian number 2, when the latter gave up with a cramp.

Sinner had won the first, very similar set, in a tiebreak. In the second set, Griekspoor managed to break the Italian at 5-5 in games. On his own service, he then convincingly took the set with an ACE (7-5). Sinner hid himself at the end of that second set and seemed to be bothered by cramps. He was treated outside the job between sets. The third set he started visibly with a burden. At a stand of 2-2 in Games, Sinner lost his own service game without making a point and the game stopped.

‘You don’t want to win that’

It is the first time that Sinner’s 29-year-old Griekspoor wins. Six times before he lost to the former number 1 in the world. Sinner had not lost anyone since mid -June, except for number one in the world Carlos Alcaraz. Griekspoor was modest afterwards and Sinner wished a quick recovery. “You don’t want to win that,” he told Anp news agency.

Griekspoor had already lost a number of games in a row. In Shanghai he won the previous round at the expense of American Jenson Brooksby for the first time since mid -July. He is ‘very satisfied’ on Sunday evening with the first two sets against Sinner. “After a difficult period I am better playing. The victory over Brooksby was important to stop the series of defeats.”

In the last sixteen, Griekspoor now meets the Monegasque Valentin Vacherot. The number 204 in the world won from the much higher Czech Tomas Machac (6-0, 3-1), which also gave up injured.
