Competitive sport often looks flawless and fulfilling. But a new example shows that appearance is often deceptive.
The Argentine tennis professional Federico Agustín Gómez has contacted the public with an emotional message. In the past few months, he had experienced serious psychological problems and even had thoughts of suicide, the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram.
“It is very difficult for me to write everything without crying, but I think it is the best decision I could make at that moment to remove this great load that I feel and that my thoughts eat 24/7,” said Gómez. The currently 135th of the world ranking said that he had even considered ending his career.
He emphasized that he did not share his story out of attention, but to be able to focus again. “I hope that I can now live a little more in peace with what I do, what I love, namely play tennis,” wrote Gómez. He wanted to work to regain his emotional balance.
He received support from the tennis world. Boris Becker turned directly to him on the platform X: “God bless Federico! If I can somehow help, contact me via Instagram!”
