Tennis, night tournaments and the Fonseca phenomenon

In the 250 of Los Cablos the German and the Greek advance, while De Minaur, finalist from Rotterdam, is out. In Rio the Brazilian is the first 2006 player to have won a match. In the doubles Bolelli and Vavassori reach the quarterfinals

On the Italian night, no problems for Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the ATP 250 tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico. The German, seeded number 1, got the better of the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka with a score of 6-3 6-0, in the round of 16, the same score as the Greek over Aleksandar Vukic. However, the Rotterdam finalist, the number 3 seed Alex De Minaur, who lost 6-4 6-1 to Michelsen, was eliminated. In the lower part of the scoreboard, the quarter-final between Borges (6-3 6-3 to Purcell) and the number 4 seed Ruud who dominated Giron 6-1 6-0. Finally Kovacevic beat Hijikata 6-3 4-6 6-4 and will now find Tsitsipas, while for Zverev there will be Kokkinakis.

double and…

Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori’s fantastic start to the season continues in Rio. The two Italians qualified for the quarter-finals in doubles, winning their tenth victory out of eleven matches in 2024, which earned them temporary second place in the Race for Turin. The 38-year-old from Budrio and the 28-year-old from Turin, fresh from the first ATP title won last Sunday in Buenos Aires, defeated on their debut 6-4 3-6 10-7, in just over an hour and a half of match, the Spaniard Marcel Granollers and the Argentine Horacio Zeballos. In the quarterfinals they will have to deal with the other Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena and the Serbian Dusan Lajovic. Also in Rio, in the men’s singles, orphaned by Carlos Alcaraz (the ankle injury is nothing serious, he will be a regular at Indian Wells), a star was probably born: it is the 17-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca, the first tennis player born in 2006 to have won a match, leaving the crumbs to a 2004, Artur Fils, number 36 in the world, annihilated, 6-0 6-4. A great baseline hitter with a good head on his shoulders, he has been talked about for some time at junior level, and little by little he is emerging among the adults too. Now for him in the round of 16 there is the Chilean Garin, a good test of maturity.
