Shortly before the first round game in the Billie Jean King Cup with the German tennis selection, Tatjana Maria reached a WTA semi-final for the first time this season.

In Bogotá, the 35-year-old Swabian easily defeated the Italian outsider Nuria Brancaccio 6:3, 6:2 in the quarter-finals on Friday. In the semi-finals, last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist meets Laura Pigossi from Brazil or Britain’s Francesca Jones.

Maria, seeded number two, is the only German starter at the nearly 260,000 US dollar clay court tournament in the Colombian capital.

Next week, Maria will play against Brazil in the Billie Jean King Cup with the German women’s tennis team led by team boss Rainer Schüttler. The encounter will be held in Stuttgart on April 14th and 15th.
