Eva Lys caused a surprise in Montreal and reached the third round of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time. The Hamburg native defeated the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, which was placed in position 27, 6: 4 after a strong performance and is now dealing with a very thick chunk: In the fight for the round of 16, Wimbledon winner Iga Swiatek (Poland) is waiting for the 23-year-old.

For Lys, however, victory against the Wimbledon quarter-finalist Pavlyuchenkova is a success. Before the trip to Canada, Lys had canceled her home tournament in Hamburg due to a rheumatism. Already in the first round she had given the Frenchwoman Leolia Jeanjean no chance in two sets. Lys consistently used her chances against Pavlyuchenkova in the important moments and made few mistakes.

Lys is the last German in the tournament. Laura Siegemund, who defeated the German number one Tatjana Maria in a marathon match in the first round, defeated the Australian Open winner Madison Keys (USA) in two sets.
