Tennis-ace Alexander Zverev took the victory at the ATP tournament in Munich, leather pants and second place in the world rankings-just in time for Madrid, Rome and the French Open in Paris.
There was one birthday present after the other on Sunday for Germany’s best tennis player Alexander Zverev. In the Bavarian spring sun, the birthday child got its money’s worth: only Zverev got himself with that Victory at the ATP tournament in Munich His first title this year, the audience celebrated him with a “happy birthday”. With the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder, he had to make a selfie, there was a car and leather pants from the organizers.
And so the 28 -year -old slipped into the leather on the center and in front of the spectators, out of the crisis months – and back to second place in the world rankings. “I’m going to enjoy my birthday now and that I won a tournament,” said Hamburger after the game at Sky.
Zverev: “A few difficult months for us”
For Zverev, the victory in Munich could trigger the hoped -for trend reversal after disappointing weeks. After the defeat in the final of the Australian Open against the world ranking of Jannik Sinner, after the many tears that flowed in Melbourne, he had not got beyond the quarter -finals in the following six tournament takeover.
“It was a few difficult months for us, so it is always nice to take a trophy home with you,” Zverev looked back on the past few weeks and months, while father Alexander Senior held the long missing moments with his cell phone.
The turning point in the quarter -finals of Munich against Griekspoor
In Munich, Zverev prevailed for rounds against his opponents. In the quarter -finals, he defeated Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands in three competitive sets – a kind of turning point: “I have lost many such matches in the past few months. I hope that was a bit the match where my season and shape change,” said the Hamburger afterwards. He won the semi -final against Fabian Marozsan from Hungary with 7: 6 (7: 3), 6: 3.
And the 28-year-old was also confident in the final on Easter Sunday: against US shooting star Ben Shelton, who allowed himself to be serious mistakes, Zverev clearly prevailed 6: 2, 6: 4. “I don’t think we have to talk about the last few weeks. I am incredibly happy about the title and the level I played,” said the German tennis star after his triumph. After 2017 and 2018, Zverev’s third success at the tournament – Zverev was able to draw with the record winner Philipp Kohlschreiber (Augsburg).
For Zverev, Madrid, Rome and Paris are now on the program
Zverev is now traveling to the two Masters tournaments in Madrid and Rome – this is followed by the French Open in Paris (from May 25th). Last year he won in Rome and lost the final against Carlos Alcaraz in five in Paris. So he has a lot of points in the world rankings. The 500 points he receives from the upgrading of the Munich tournament come. With the Big Points in the account, the leather pants in the suitcase and the new self-confidence, the 28-year-old can look at the coming weeks confidently.
