Now IGA Swiatek: Alexandra Eala, number 140 of the world rankings, defeated the next top player at the WTA tournament in Miami. Eala says that everything is “completely surreal”.
Eala won the quarter -finals completely with 6: 2, 7: 5. Previously, the 19-year-old had already beat Australian Open winner Madison Keys and the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, winner of the French Open 2017.
Swiatek, who has already won the French Open four times, continued to wait for her first title in 2025. The Polish triumphed last year in Paris.
“I don’t know what to say, I am completely incredulously and on cloud seven”, said Eala: “It is completely surreal. I am so happy to be able to measure myself on this stage with such a player.”
As Wildcard starter in the semi -finals
Eala, which until recently was mainly on the Challenger tour, continues to write on a tennis fairy tale. Already in the third round she wrote with her victory over the high favorite Keys (USA) Filipino tennis history: The Wildcard starter was the first player from the Southeast Asian country in the open era to win over a top 10 player.
After the tournament, Eala will climb into the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time. In the semifinals, either the British Emma Raducanu or Jessica Pegula from the USA is waiting. Raducanu has already won a Grand Slam title in her career, the US Open 2021.
