The 1987 Wimbledon winner dared to criticize the audience at the Australian Open. “In my opinion, Australian audiences have gotten a little out of control over the last ten years,” the 58-year-old said recently. A statement that Nick Kyrgios was anything but pleased with.
The 28-year-old, who thrilled fans in Melbourne around 2022 with his then doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis, rumbled in an interview with the “Daily Mail Australia”: “An absolutely stupid comment from another old hand who has no idea how marketing or how things work these days. You need entertainment.”
Kyrgios highlights the entertainment factor in tennis
Today’s generation doesn’t have a “high attention span,” Kyrgios said: “That’s why there are these clips on Instagram that are 15 to 20 seconds long. Someone like Pat Cash wouldn’t be able to understand this concept.”
Entertainment, Kyrgios continued, is now part of tennis. “It just makes everyone else in the sport more money. That’s what it does. And if Pat Cash doesn’t understand that…he’s stubborn, old and set in his ways.”
Two years ago he himself helped put on a great show: “That was incredible. Ash Barty played the best tennis of her career and won the Grand Slam. Thanasi and I won the Grand Slam. And we had the highest ratings.”
Nick Kyrgios, who has been plagued by injuries, will not be taking part in the Australian Open this year. Instead, he works as a “Eurosport” expert.
