Tennis, Australian Open in Melbourne: Kerber conqueror Kanepi and Medvedev in the round of 16 – tennis

Also Halep in the round of 16

Two-time Grand Slam winner Simona Halep has also reached the round of 16. The former world number one from Romania easily beat Danka Kovinic from Montenegro 6:2, 6:1. Kovinic still had in the second round US Open– Winner Emma Raducanu (Great Britain) knocked out. Halep, who was in the Melbourne final in 2018 and a quarter-finalist last year, now meets France’s Alize Cornet, who after beating clear favorite Garbine Muguruza (Spain) secured a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Tamara Zidansek from Slovenia followed.

Van de Zandschulp had no chance against Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev provided the next proof of his class in the men. The 25-year-old Russian did not miss a beat in the 6: 4, 6: 4, 6: 2 round of 16 against the Dutch US Open quarter-finalist Botic van de Zandschulp and repeatedly freed himself convincingly from precarious situations. Van de Zandschulp clearly defeated Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) in the first round. Last year’s finalist Medvedev is the highest-ranked professional in Melbourne in the absence of world number one Novak Djokovic and counts with Alexander Zverev and the 20-timer major champion Rafael Nadal to the narrow circle of title candidates. Last year he celebrated his first at the US Open Grand Slam-Triumph and defeated van de Zandschulp in four sets along the way. Again, Medvedev proved to be too constant and variable, but he had to work a lot for his victory.

This also applied to world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece, who defeated French Benoit Paire 6: 3, 7: 5, 6: 7 (2: 7), 6: 4. The American Taylor Fritz won 6:0, 3:6, 3:6, 6:4, 6:3 against the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.

Struff/Koepfer out, Pütz/Venus on

For Jan-Lennard Struff and Dominik Koepfer, on the other hand, the Australian Open also ended in doubles. The tennis duo lost in the second round against Ariel Behar/Gonzalo Escobar from Uruguay and Ecuador 6:7 (5:7), 6:4, 2:6. Struff suffered a first-round defeat in singles, Koepfer was eliminated in the second round. In the second round of the doubles competition, on the other hand, Tim Pütz is with New Zealander Michael Venus. The two defeated Roberto Carballes Baena and Hugo Gaston of Spain and France 6-1, 6-4. Also still there are Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies.
