Ten unmissable activities at the Mar del Plata Film Festival 2022

The main film festival in Latin America will take place from November 3 to 13, celebrating its thirty-seventh edition. This year it returns to full presence with a convening and attractive program for the meeting between the world of cinema and its public, as it was 68 years ago. Among the local artists honored will be Ricardo Darin and Cecilia Roth for his career in the seventh art, added to the posthumous memories of Jean Luc Godard, Jonas Mekas and Leonardo Favio.

The event chaired by Fernando Juan Limaunder the artistic direction of the brand new programmer and editor Paul Count, will have twelve international films in the official competition, ten in the Latin American competition and ten in its national counterpart. In addition to the more than 80 films that will be exhibited, both in the various competitive and panorama sections, there will be activities for the entire public: talks with established filmmakers and thematic focuses, which join the classic shows such as Zero Hour, VHS Generation and Open Veins.

The Mar del Plata International Film Festival It was part of the growth of the Argentine film industry. The Auditorium Theater, Ambassador Cinema, Paseo Aldrey Cinema and Colón Theater, will be some of the Mar del Plata venues for the film event, which has Category “A” of the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF).

Leonard Favio

This edition is dedicated to the great Leonardo Favio, ten years after his passage to immortality. With the desire to celebrate that artistic legacy that transcends generations and continues to be an inspiration for new and new filmmakers, various activities will be developed around the figure of him and will be screened “The dependent” and “Nazareno Cruz and the wolf” in the original 35mm format.

Hard to Kill

The return to face-to-face means the return of filmmakers, actors, actresses and fundamentally the public, who will once again populate the theaters. In this way, the Festival is promoted with important international visitors, such as the North American director John McTiernan, who, in addition to receiving recognition for his career, will present his films “Hard to Kill” (1988), starring Bruce Willis, and “Predator” (1987), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Jean-Luc Godard

On the other hand, this edition pays tribute to one of the most iconic and famous filmmakers in the history of cinema, the French master Jean-Luc Godard, passed away this year. The screening of his first feature film, “Breathless”at the Opening of the Festival will be accompanied by “Godard seoul le cinema”the recent documentary Cyril Leuty which reviews almost seven decades and more than one hundred and twenty works through interviews and archive images.

A different proposal of the 37th edition is the special event “How long is a century? Silent cinema with live music”, which celebrates one hundred years of mythical films in screenings set to music by contemporary artists. In this framework you can see four unique projections: Nosferatu (F. W. Murnau) musicalized by María Ezquiaga; Häxan with soundscapes from the band Die Krabben; a program of short films Lotte Reiniger and Germaine Dulac, musicalized by Atacama – Ensemble of improvisers; and the films recovered from Renee Goldaccompanied live by the band Tremor.

Gender Perspective

An activity to highlight is the fifth edition of the Cinema Forum and Gender Perspective, which aims to build and promote transformative and active strategies to make visible and reflect on gender inequalities in the different fields related to cinema. This year they will participate as exhibitors, in its two days of activities, Clarisa Navas, Vanessa Ragone, Jael Caiero, Sofía Victoria Díaz, Carmen Guarini, Paola Rizzi, Alejandra Portela and Thelma Fardin.

Kinuyo Tanaka

The actress and director Kinuyo Tanaka, a fundamental figure in the history of Japanese cinema, will have its own exhibition in tribute to his work. In this retrospective you will see “The Moon Rises” Y “Eternal Breasts”two of her most representative feature films as a director, and films directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, Heinosuke Gosho, Keisuke Kinoshita, and Mikio Narusestarring her.

Renée Gold

The Mar del Plata event, together with the INCAA National Cinematheque and the ENERC Library, will exhibit the recovery of a material by the Argentine director Renée Oro that was considered lost and whose first record dates from a hundred years ago. This great news is analyzed in detail in the book “For the nations of America. The silent documentary film of Renée Oro (historical and technical study)” which will be presented at the meeting.

David Cronenberg

To this volume is added a second book also published by the Festival: “Bodies Invaded. David Cronenberg’s Videodrome: Long Live the New Flesh”, collective text written by critics specialized in the horror genre that celebrates “Videodrome”, one of the fundamental works of the main Canadian filmmaker. The presentation will be accompanied by a screening of the film, starring James Woods and Debbie Harryin restored version.

Jonas Mekas

To celebrate the centenary of his birth, a program of short films by the legendary American filmmaker, of Lithuanian origin, will also be screened. Jonas Mekas. Together, with the projection it will be presented to the public “Sparkles of beauty”a book by the filmmaker recently published by the publishing house black box.
