Telstar wants to start renovating the East Stand this summer: “We have to do something there”

At the end of October 2022, Telstar announced an ambitious plan to renovate the stadium, but a year and a half later there is still nothing to see. “I think that’s a shame, but it is not the case that you just demolish the East Stand and build a new one,” says stadium development project leader Steef Hammerstein.

“What we thought was important is to keep things moving and actively involve the municipality. So that this stadium is future-proof,” Hammerstein continues.

Slow process

Telstar’s stadium development is proceeding slowly. Hammerstein explains that the stadium is part of Sportpark Schoonenberg, which is home to several residents: VV Waterloo, VV IJmuiden, Strawberries, Telstar, Careworx, De IJmuider Harmonie, dart and klootshooting club ‘full speed’. “We must not forget the neighborhood. Of course, they also have a voice. You have to get all those parties on the same path.”

“Something also has to be done, because we are talking about the future of Telstar”

Hammerstein remains positive and is actually confident that something will happen in the Telstar stadium this summer. “I see progress step by step. I see and feel that we are getting closer. Together with the steering group, we believe in it, otherwise we would have stopped. Something has to be done, because we are talking about the future of Telstar.”

Renovation of the East Stand

The permit application is currently being submitted to the municipality to temporarily renovate the current East Stand. If Hammerstein has his way, the temporary renovation of the East Stand will start this summer. The idea is to create a catering square and sanitary facilities halfway between the stands.

Hammerstein therefore hopes that something will happen in the Telstar stadium this summer. When we go to eat some fish in the village a little later, most IJmond residents do not see Telstar’s stadium being renovated.

“Continue to have confidence in the club and all the people who are doing their very best. Telstar has to work on its future. That requires a good home and that will come,” Hammerstein counters.
