Two major losses against RKC (4-2) and AZ (1-5) seem to drop the promotion dream up. Nevertheless, after the win on ADO Den Haag, hope is again, although Lost in The Hague is lost. The last duels with AZ and RKC are both won 2-0 and because all the clubs grab points apart, Telstar finishes second in the after competition. RKC eventually goes to the Eredivisie.
1981/82
A strong season in the first division is rewarded with participation in the after competition. De Witte Leeuwen are fourth just four points from champion Helmond Sport.
The expectations in the after competition are high, but Telstar disappoints considerably. Against Excelsior, SC Heerenveen and FC VVV, only the Venlonaren is won at home. Telstar finishes last in the group, but the focus is mainly on the financial situation. In the end it is possible to end up again in the first division after the summer.
1978/79
From 1964 to 1978 Telstar plays in the Eredivisie. In the first season 1978/79 it hopes to return to the highest level soon, but that soon turns out to be too difficult. Telstar finishes tenth, but still participates in the after competition because of the second place behind champion Excelsior in the third period.
Despite the low expectations, Telstar starts the after competition with a 3-0 win over Willem II. Then it goes completely wrong and Telstar loses five games in a row. The Mesinbant will follow in Groningen on 10 June. The FC Groningen supporter threw a stiletto to Telstar player Fred Bischot. The knife just went wrong, but the images crossed the world.
