Led by the top stars Julian Weber and Malaika Mihambo, the German athletes made the leap on the podium at the team in Madrid and completed a good form check for two and a half months before the World Championships in Tokyo.
Speer thrower Weber won the only win for the DLV selection on Sunday, which after four days with 397 points behind Italy (431.5) and Poland (404.5). At the European Championships two years ago in Chorzów in Poland, the team also reached third place.
Ex-European champion Weber, who had exceeded the 90-meter brand for the first time this year, clearly prevailed at 85.15 m. In addition to the Mainz, only the second -placed Ukrainian Artur Felfner (80.54) came beyond 80 meters. According to Karl Bebendorf, Weber provided the third individual success in the Team European Championship over the 3,000 meters of obstacle and Caroline Joyeux.
Mihambo in the lead for a long time
Tokyo Olympic champion Mihambo led in the long jump at the late temperatures of over 35 degrees to the penultimate attempt at 6.84 m, but still had to let the Italian vice-European champion Larissa Iapichino (6.92) pass by.
For the Olympic champion of 2021, the vastness meant the best outdoor seasonal performance. The increase also gives hope for the World Cup in Tokyo in September.
Former junior world champion Sophia Junk ran over 200 m with a clear personal best time of 22.53 seconds. High jumper Imke Onnen (1.94) was also third. Frederik Ruppert, who powdered the German record over 3000 m obstacle in May in Rabat, ran fourth in fourth place on the “flat” (13: 47.31).
The event in Madrid was the eleventh edition of the Team European Championship. The best 16 nations took part and sent an athlete, an athlete or a season into the 37 competitions. The better the placement, the more points there was for the team.
