Selena Gomez has confirmed long-standing speculation: Taylor Swift’s song “Dorothea” is about her. Das she revealed in a recent episode of “Friends Keep Secrets,” the web series from her husband Benny Blanco and artist Lil Dicky.
Gomez explained why Swift’s music hits her on a particularly personal level. Swift has written at least two songs that trace their journey together – from teenage stardom to life as grown women in Hollywood to the relationship they both have today. (Gomez married music producer Blanco last September, and Swift got engaged to NFL star Travis Kelce in August of the same year.)
“So, ‘Dorothea’ is about me – one of her songs,” Gomez explained. “I feel like there are so many huge moments that shaped us in it – from relationships to family to love, hate and everything in between. We worked through it all together because I was 15 and she was 18, and we didn’t really know what was happening. We never saw each other differently because of it. When I hear it, I’m so impressed by how beautifully worded it is.”
Unreleased song “Family”
Gomez also talked about a second, unreleased song called “Family,” which Swift wrote “easily a decade ago,” which also sheds light on their close friendship. The lyrics are about Gomez’s dreams of acting in films, while Swift’s ambitions were aimed at selling out stadiums. “When I hear the song now, both things have come true for us,” she said.
“We got through it as best we could,” Gomez laughed. “It’s absolutely incredible, after 17 years of friendship, multiple heartbreaks, love stories, beautiful memories and life – we both, thankfully, got engaged around the same time and that was just the coolest thing.”
When Swift released “Dorothea” as part of her album “Evermore” in 2020, fans were immediately convinced that the track was about Gomez – with lines like “the girl who left her small town to chase down Hollywood dreams” and “you’re a queen sellin’ dreams, sellin’ makeup and magazines”.
