As announced, Taylor Swift’s documentary series “The End of an Era” gives a look behind the scenes of the “Eras Tour”. Even when things get dark. The first episode of the series chronicles the unimaginable horror that struck the tour during the European leg. In August 2024, Swift was forced to cancel three nights in Vienna, Austria after a terrorist attack was foiled.
Dealing with fear and returning to the stage
“I never in my life thought we would be dealing with a terrorist attack,” Swift says in “The End of an Era.” In a direct-to-camera interview, she wears a black shirt and wipes tears from her eyes. “We prevented a massacre,” Swift continues.
She then explains how she deals with such life-changing events and still continues to perform for millions of fans. “You isolate it,” she says, comparing herself to a pilot who has to reassure everyone that everything is okay, even if it isn’t.
Less than a week after the foiled terrorist attack in Vienna, Swift and her team had five shows scheduled at Wembley Stadium in London. The first episode of “The End of an Era” follows the singer as she returns to the stage. Just days after the tour stop in Vienna put thousands of lives in danger.
“I have a strange feeling when I think about these last five shows in Europe,” Swift admits beforehand. In the clip you can clearly see that she is still badly affected by the catastrophic events. Her voice is rough and brittle. She is wearing an oversized T-shirt. Still, Swift remains resilient.
Wembley, team spirit and special moments
“There’s no challenge she won’t overcome,” says Swift’s long-time bassist Amos Heller as the team prepare for their Wembley dates. Heller knows what he’s talking about – he’s been touring with the star since 2007.
So begins the challenge of giving fans the best comeback concert of all time. Swift calls her longtime companion and friend Ed Sheeran to perform with him as part of the Surprise Songs section. In an intimate moment backstage with Sheeran, Swift explains that the film crew she’s currently accompanying was originally supposed to start filming in Vienna. In the same clip, she admits to feeling “very hunted lately.”
After the terrorist plan and the canceled Vienna shows, Swift was criticized online for not making a public statement immediately afterwards. The singer only commented on the events after she wrapped up her London shows.
Swift’s statement and emotional aftermath
“I want to be clear: I will not comment publicly on anything if I believe it might provoke those who wish to harm fans at my concerts,” Swift wrote on Instagram at the time. “My priority was to finish our European tour safely.”
The End of an Era episodes also reveal how emotional Swift’s Wembley Stadium shows were for her, despite the many unique surprises and palpable resilience. While in London, the star met backstage with families affected by knife attacks at a child-focused Swift dance studio. The actual meetings are not shown, but afterwards the singer breaks down in tears backstage while her mother finds words of comfort.
“You really helped them, I know that,” Andrea Swift says to her daughter.
“It’s my job to be able to endure all these feelings and immediately appear strong again,” Swift says at another point in the documentary. After the safe performance and the successful first Eras concert in London, Swift can be seen leaving the venue, visibly relieved. But just before she gets into a black van, she can’t help but ask her tour manager Robert Aleen: “Has something bad happened that I don’t know about?”
