Taylor Swift announces new album at Video Music Awards 2022

Taylor Swift announced her next album at the MTV Video Music Awards. “I thought it might be a nice moment to tell you guys… my brand new album is out on October 21st. I’ll tell you more at midnight.” Swift later shared the album artwork on Twitter. Accordingly, the album should be called MIDNIGHTS and contain 13 tracks. The song titles are not yet known.

The songs contain “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life,” according to the announcement. It is a “collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through fears and sweet dreams. The floors we walk on and the demons we encounter.”

Taylor Swift was recognized for the video for the re-recorded 10-minute version of her song “All Too Well”. She is the first artist to have won the Video Of The Year award three times. She won it in 2015 for “Bad Blood” and again in 2019 for “You Need to Calm Down”.

“I’m so honored to be recognized alongside such great artists and directors in this category,” Swift said. “I just want to say that I’m so encouraged that for the first time in the history of the VMAs, four of the directors in the Video of the Year category are women.”

She also thanked her fans: “I am aware of every second of this moment that we could not have made this short film without you, the fans. Because I couldn’t have re-recorded my albums without you guys… you gave me the courage to do it.”

“All Too Well” originally appeared on their 2012 album RED. In 2021 she re-recorded the track for the reissue RED (TAYLOR’S VERSION). Once in a five-minute, once in a ten-minute version. The long version is the longest song to hit the top of the Billboard charts to date. In 2021, she also released another version with The National’s Aaron Dessner called Sad Girl Autumn.

The background to the new recordings is a dispute between Swift and her former label Big Machine over the rights to her music. She therefore wants to re-record all six albums that were released by Big Machine between 2006 and 2017. FEARLESS (TAYLOR’S VERSION) and RED (TAYLOR’S VERSION) have been released so far.
