Nika Prevc won the Two Nights Tour. Her brother Domen leads the tour standings. The family members encourage each other and have a unique selling point.
Before the last competition of the Four Hills Tournament, the Slovenian Domen Prevc leads the overall ranking with a 41.4 point lead over the Austrian Jan Hörl. Prevc won on the ski jumps in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen and was only defeated by the Japanese Ren Nikaido in Innsbruck.
The chances that the 26-year-old will be this year’s winner of the tour are very good. If Domen Prevc succeeds in this, he would follow in the footsteps of his brother and former jumper Peter, who was crowned winner in the 2015/16 season. The two’s sister, Nika Prevc, also won the Two Nights Tour, the women’s equivalent of the tour this year.
The three siblings share a unique jumping style. Quite a few observers describe Domen Prevc as fearless. Why? Domen Prevc crouches low in the run-up lane and then leans far forward when taking off. To do a deep squat, you then have to jump off powerfully in order to carry the momentum well and hit the take-off table as best as possible. Prevc manages this balance well, even though he ties his shoes loosely. Due to the loose binding, power is usually lost when jumping, but not so with the Slovenian. He has perfected his jumping technique.
A loose tie is unusual but is the hallmark of Domen Prevc. This means that it is not “trapped” so tightly in the stiff material, and of course it also takes more risk because it foregoes stability. But it is more flexible, even when landing. Due to the loose binding, Domen Prevc has more leeway, which is also an advantage.
Martin Schmitt had already noticed the disadvantages of landing. The former German ski jumper said in an interview with t-online in the fall: “The modern equipment has made the flight phase much more stable and safe, but the material is actually not made for landing. The shoes are already very stiff and are additionally reinforced with carbon shells.” This means that landing, especially in the telemark position, is still a risky situation. Prevc gets around this with its other binding.
