More than half a century of dictatorship has come to an end in Syria. Last night, President Bashar al-Assad fled the country and this morning the rebels liberated the capital Damascus. The overthrow of power appears to be taking place peacefully, with no signs of revenge attacks on the regime for the time being. Rebel leader Al-Jawlani promises to organize elections. “The rebels are now showing a moderate face, but it remains to be seen,” says Brigitte Herremans, researcher at Ghent University and lecturer at UAntwerp.
